..and there’s this commercial, an anti-drug commercial, that has left me confused.

According to the stats in this commercial, 99% of children are offered drugs before they turn 18. My wife and I are in the other 1%. One of my exes was in the other 1%. My sister is in the other 1%. My ex did report trying smoking once as a teen, but none of the rest of us ever tried. We were also never offered alcohol underage...

I’ve never been offered illegal drugs in my life. I didn’t know what weed smelled like until I was 31 and moved to WA. This was also the first time I was offered the stuff, half-heartedly, because they knew I had never done it and had never smoked. It was legal at this point.

Are we all weird/square/whatever, or is this ad totally lying to us? What was your experience?

So this isn’t completely off topic, here’s a Lamborghini with a marijuana wrap (I think):

Guess that makes myself, my entire family, and a good percentage of my friends part of the 1%.

Every member of my family is part of that 1% as well.

And this makes it seem like it’s not true.

But I have two siblings that were the exact opposite. They were smoking and drinking by the time their ages were in the double digits, then they were doing drugs by the time they were in middle school. Which makes me think that maybe there is something to their claimed stats.

I was offered weed, alcohol, and pills all before high school, but then again I come from an extremely well-off town where the only thing for rich kids had to do was smoke and drink and stuff like that so I’m not sure if mine’s a normal experience.

My two cents is that you would be in the extreme minority. I think I’ve only ever been to one town where I would *almost* believe that any one individual has never been offered drugs, and that’s Provo.

I and most people I know have been offered illegal substances before 18, but that has more to do with where I live than anything. I’d believe that number being above 80% but certainly not 99%

I lived near there for a while (two rough suburbs of SLC). I also lived in Los Angeles...

Three others in this thread claim that they (and more people in their families) are in the same minority.

I don’t think I was offered pot when I was a kid, but I knew where it could be foumnd (it’s not just big here now, it was 20+ years ago too), but booze, for sure. I don’t like smoking, and drinking lost much appeal by the time I was out of school, so no problems.

I can believe the stat.

Heck, I provided beer for underagers when I was in college, it was a different world.

It’s like my wife says, statistics are fine and all, but for you it’s either 0% or 100%.

Kidding aside, statistics like that depend on your polling population (including things like generation and geographical location, economic bracket, etc.) and size.

I was probably offered, but I was the designated driver to get my little sister’s drunk ass home from parties. Not a frequent occurrence but when it happened that’s how it went.

I definitely was offered drugs before I was 18. Work an odd job with carnies, it was pretty much a given. I have never done drugs though. I like life enough without them.

Alcohol was very common in junior high and high school. I was in a very small minority that didn’t drink, let alone under-age drink.

I distinctly remember being in junior high, seeing elementary school kids drinking Mike’s Hard Lemonades. Kirkland, for what it’s worth. I didn’t drink until after high school, didn’t really get offered anything but I think that’s more because I made it pretty clear I wasn’t interested

I say the 99% is a little strong...

Funny this is brought up, I almost feel kind of like a reverse anomaly when it comes to friends with this in a way. I was smoking cigarettes and -redacted- and -redacted- and... - redacted- around 16 years old....but I didn’t lose my virginity until I was about 19. Well after all my friends had.

There’s an anti-smoking commercial going around that talks about how 60% of tobacco users have a substance abuse problem. Umm... I’m pretty sure 100% percent of people who smoke have a substance abuse problem? Since that’s what smoking is? An addiction?

Never offered drugs till sophmore year of college. In highschool I was never offered, but it was kind of obvious who to ask. The kids that smoked/drank did nearly every weekend, they were also rich AF and no need to fear consequences. I had one aquantiance who over the summer started smoking and along with a bunch a family issues saw his life go to shit and didn’t want that.

I also had a fairly sheltered childhood. I would guess the number wouldn’t be 99 but maybe over 90.

The first time I was offered drugs was when I was 22 visiting Barcelona for the first time. Drugs are too expensive to just offer people unless you’re a dealer for the Russian mob. The people paying for anti drug ads in the US religious extremists.

I can honestly say I have had the opposite experience.

I was offered 2 weeds and 5 LSDs before I even got to see any D.A.R.E. program material in 5th grade.

Since I didn’t know what drugs were at that time, I took them. I can only assume thats what caused the 7 lapses in memory, which ended with me waking up in the hospital.

I’ve been offered free alcohol at every house I’ve been to since I was 12. I’m guessing my patchy mustache was misleading. But thankfully, I was aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol at the time and I didn’t even take 1 alcohol.

I think there are too many drugs in the world that people just give away to kids. Heck, some immigrants bring cars full of them across the border. All you have to do is not be an adult; and voila - free drugs and alcohol!

Say no to school. Stay in drugs!

I would have to agree, although it’s clearly a gateway drug/substance to a bunch of other drugs/substances. That is, if you can/will smoke tobacco, it’s far more likely that you can/will smoke other things because it’s an unusual activity.

Beyond that, tobacco addiction indicates that the person is likely to become addicted to things. I wouldn’t be surprised if something like alcohol addiction usually comes with tobacco addiction.

Technically everything is a substance.

“60% of tobacco users go on to develop worse substance abuse problems” would have been more apt.

Man you must have grown up in a Norman Rockwell painting. (and I don’t mean that in any bad way). For me sneaking a beer or a smoke was a normal kid thing to do by 16 or 17. Pot was around and offered by about 17 but I only tried it while backpacking in Europe at 18 in Amsterdam. Haven’t touched it since as it could be an issue for employment. I’d say even the most ‘square’ as you put it, people I know don’t think pot is out of the ordinary or worrying for adults even if they do frown on it. I find cigarettes more strange these days as it just seems like an outdated thing to do. So to answer you question, yes you seem would seem to me to be in the minority. I’m not sure it’s 99% have been offered drugs but 90% doesn’t seem too high in my experience.
